Mother’s Day being observed

24 April Kathmandu : ‘Mata Tirtha Aunsi’ or Mother’s Day is being celebrated across the country by honouring mothers for their sacrifice, love and affection. The festival is celebrated with people offering sweets, fruits and gifts to their mothers and receiving blessings from them. It usually falls on the new moon as per the lunar calendar.

On this special day, people who have lost their mothers, reach religious sites, take dip in holy pond or river and offer tarpan to their late mother. It is believed that those who take a holy bath in ponds and offer tarpan helps their deceased mother get salvation while it also brings prosperity to the family.

Various fairs also used to take place during the day in different religious locations across the country. However, all have been cancelled including the Mata Tirtha fair held at Chandragiri municipality-6 over fear of coronavirus, said the municipality mayor Ghana Shyam Giri.
