Majority of houses in Susta area inundated

21 July Parashi : The majority of the houses in Susta rural municipality-5 in Nawalparasi district have been inundated due to swollen Narayani River. The Susta area has altogether 265 houses.

The incessant rain since Monday has risen water level in Narayani River. Two thatched houses have sustained damages due to the inundation, informed local leader Rabindra Jaiswal.

Locals in Susta have been frightened following the inundation. Those at high risk of inundation have shifted to safer places, according to Jaiswal. “There’s high risk of damages to people and properties since the water flow in the local rivers and streams were getting higher,” he said.

Water measuring four feet above the land entered and engulfed Susta village, added Susta rural municipality’s chairperson Ram Prasad Pandey. Pandey shared that all 36 doors of the Gandak Barrage have been opened after the water level in the Narayani River rose alarmingly.

The water level in the river currently was 432,000 cusec, he said adding that it meant high risk for incidents as flood and inundation. Locals residing in the river side have been urged to be aware of the flood, inundation and sweeping away of land due to torrential rain.

The rain has also incurred damages to as many as 1,200 bigha of paddy at Sarawal rural municipality ward no 5, 6 and 7, said Sarawal rural municipality chair Radheshyam Chaudhary. Flood in Jharahi River and Dhanewa River often spell disasters for human settlements in these wards in the rural municipality.
